Landscape regeneration project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Landscape regeneration project - Essay Example The broader objective of the urban regeneration project was to change people's attitudes towards the environment by increasing their awareness of environmental problems and ways to overcome them. Physical improvements and environmental protection measures were designed to complement and facilitate leisure, training, and social activities on the grounds of the Park. The Park's development was based on a well-integrated Master Plan. The Urban Pilot Project focused on the first stage, which developed an area of about 0.7 km. The Project was implemented from January 1991 to June 1995. The planned cost amounted to 7.68 MECU, 75% of which comprised co-financing from the European Regional Development. The aim of the project was to address the poor quality of the environment and the economic and social blight. This project combines a scheme which would have an immediate impact on the quality of life of the local inhabitants, but which would also be of a broader benefit in terms of increasing the environmental awareness of the general public. The objectives of the Queen's Tower Park project were: to improve the quality of the environment in West Athens : a.) to develop leisure and sports facilities; b.) to increase the public's environmental awareness; c.) to spread the benefits of economic growth to local communities; d.) to unite members of immigrant minorities into the community's; e.) to push local authorities to develop a more integrated approach to their problems; f.) to foster trade activities to support the Park; g.) to preserve historic buildings within the Park's boundaries. DISCUSSION OF THE QUOTATION AND THE EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE CONVENTION The Athens Urban Regeneration Program mirrors the key themes of the Olwig quotation, "Architects who think only in terms of the power of scenic space, ignoring the exigencies of community and place, run the risk of producing landscapes of social inequality like those of the great eighteenth-century British estates It is also possible, however, for architects to shape environments that foster the desire to maintain the continuities that maintain a collective sense of commonwealth, rooted in custom but open to change." (Olwig, 2002).This quotation is applicable to the Athens Project since the architectural developments in that area focused on fostering close interaction among communities and uplifting their socio-economic welfare through well-paved roads, telecommunication facilities and other infrastructure upgrading system. The Athens Urban Pilot Project aimed to tackle environmental and social problems in West Athens. Prior to this development, this city district has been affected b y rapid urbanization which, coupled with a lack of planned urban development, has led to a series of social and environmental problems. The district had no social amenities, inadequate social, educational, leisure and welfare facilities, and the absence of accessible green open space. Moreover, economic conditions became difficult. The decline in manufacturing employment in Western Athens led to high unemployment to the region, with a large proportion of the population on a low income. The area is filled with immigrants who transferred in the 1950s and 1960s.Graham et.al., (2000) argued that heritage exists simultaneously as an economic commodity. The economic functions of heritage have generally been presented as secondary and barely tolerated uses of monuments, sites and places, which have

Case Study 2 Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
2 - Case Study Example If the internal drive forces a customer towards the product then it is positive motivation but if it drives a customer away from a product then it is negative motivation. These positive and negative drives are what initiates and directs consumer behavior. Basic consumer motivation can either be rational or motivational. Rational consumption is when a consumer`s behavior is based upon an objective criteria for example price or the size and weight of the product being purchased. Emotional motivation, however, is when a customer purchases a product based on subjective criteria or personal likes and dislikes for example, status, fear etc. All the needs and wants of customers are either in born or are acquired through the behavior of other consumers. Human behavior is initiated through personal needs, wants and goals which are to be fulfilled. These characteristics are dependent upon the personal preferences and experiences of the consumers. There are two kinds of goals: generic or produc t specific goals. Generic goals are those which state the general needs and wants of consumers for example, the need to buy car. On the other hand, product specific goals are those which state the specific needs and wants of people for example, the kind and the model of the car the consumer wants to buy. These needs, wants and goals together initiate and drive human behavior. According to a clinical psychologist, Dr. Abraham Maslow, human behavior as well as consumer motivation is directed by five basic needs of human beings. These needs include physiological needs, safety and security needs, social needs, ego needs as well as the needs for self actualization. All of these needs, together, motivate and direct human consumer motivation which in turn initiates human behavior. In today`s world of rapid globalization and increased technology, corporations and firms have realized that it is extremely important to

The crime of Rance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The crime of Rance - Essay Example This implies that they are not socially responsible and they do not care about the safety of the citizens. Considering that this building is under renovation, it is clear that the concert has been planned for a malicious activity and not a good thing. Furthermore, a building that is under renovation presents security concerns with reference to the safety of the users. The teenager that is passing out the flyers cannot be convicted. This is because she has been hired by Rance, which is a reputable advertising company to distribute these flyers. Hence, she does not know anything regarding the issue of the concert and the associated negative or positive benefits of running the concerts. Her role is to market the event and she lacks knowledge on the use of the XTC drugs during the event. Moreover, the front corporation, which is under the control of the international criminal Wilhelm Building, should be convicted. This is because the owner knows that the building is under renovation and is leasing it for a social event. Hence, the owner should face the property crime of false pretenses because he pretended the building was in good condition yet it was under renovation. The owners can also be charged with the crime against the illicit use of the drugs. Such is because they did not vet the producers leasing the building in an effective manner to understand the nature of the concert. Hence, since they knew it was a one-day event, it implies that they had knowledge of the illegal activities linked to the concert.

White People and Young Black Men Essay Example for Free
White People and Young Black Men Essay Imagine walking down the street and having people stare at you or call you names, or talk behind your back. Imagine not knowing the time because nobody will tell you. Why wont they tell you the time, or spare you some change? Because you are black. Actually, because your skin is a different color, or because you are a different kind of religion. In a way I admire them because theyve survived for hundreds of years until they were free, and now that theyre free, the modern white man harasses them and beats them. I mean, they even had a world wide organization named for them. The KKK has been around for a while. The KKK, or Ku Klux Klan, began because of their intense hatred of black and Jewish people. Valerie Joseph, author of A Monument To Racism, writes that in front of Danny Carvers house, a KKK leader, in Flowery Branch, Georgia, were 8 or more signs, that read: A brain is a terrible thing to waste, thats why niggers dont have one. Another sign read; NAACP or Niggers, Alligators, Apes, Coons, and Possums. Or insisting that blacks dont have brains and that they should be treated like animals. There was also a figure in the front yard that had 4 young black men sitting on it with 2 KKK hooded members by them. To top it off, Carvers lawn was on the Atlantic highway, the main way through the capital. I strongly agree with Valerie Joseph when she says that she wanted to believe that people actually cared, she wanted to believe that there were lawyers, activists, parents, church groups of all races that were bombarding this man with phone calls and letters. She hoped that maybe teenagers would plan to smash the figures in the middle of the night. She also said that you can help stop this, all you have to do is try to accept people different than you as you do anyone else. If you cant, you dont have to express it, keep it to yourself. If you hear somebody saying something about somebody else, all you have to say is, listen, theyre just as equal as you are. If you do, pretty soon theyll quit. Many years ago, the states had to force businesses and schools to allow blacks in. For example, one of the establishments was the Brown V. Board of Education. Many years before, federal troops forced Little Rock Central High School to admit black students. The question I ask is, why would they want to be there if the government had to force the school system to let them in? Many years ago, there was a segregation where blacks and whites were separated in everyday life. They had different water fountains, restrooms, and even different lines at the movie theaters. Blacks also had to sit in the back of the bus while whites had top picks on seats and standing when a white person wanted your seat. Then, segregation was finally abolished. As blacks acquired middle-class status, just like their whites counterparts, they moved out of central cities and the sustaining buffers between lower-class blacks and the surrounding white role models, etc, were largely removed. (USA TODAY 55) I came across a Time magazine article that was titled Evict The Neighbor. It was about a couple that had been getting harassed by their neighbors and so they sued for $10 million in damages. U. S. District Court Judge Ann Williams granted a settlement agreement whereby the harassers will have to leave their home within 180 days. People continue to do these things even though they know that they could go to jail. Why? We ask ourselves, why do people do this? Well, it all started with the slaves. The African-Americans came to the United States hundreds and hundreds of years ago from Africa. Most of the slaves came from Ethiopia, Zaire, Somalia, and Nigeria. They came across that Atlantic Ocean with some of the first settlers. They were then sold to slave traders and auctioned off. But, back to the modern day; blacks should have some sort of protection or sense of safety with police officers, but lets consider the Rodney King trial in 1993 when police pulled over a drunken black man that they said was swerving all over the road. When the man, Rodney King, got out of his car, more than 3 police officers approached him and beat him almost to death. The whole thing was captured on video tape from one of the police cars dash-mounted cameras. The four identified police officers had a trial and when the verdict given was not guilty. The L. A. riots started almost immediately. People were beating others, looting stores, blacks were shooting people and beating white police officers. Some think that there would have been riots all over again if the jury would have found O. J. Simpson guilty a few years ago. Texaco, a large chain of gas stations throughout the United States, was sued for calling black employees porch monkeys and orangutans. Texaco pled guilty because an employee walked in on a faculty meeting and heard white employees copying the way African Americans talk. All the white employees were also getting promoted to higher ranks whereas black employees were working harder and receiving reduced checks. The settlement in the Texaco case was $115 million to about 1,400 current and former black workers, $26. 1 million in pay raises over five years for black employees, $35 million for a task force to set up diversity training programs, and an independent panel to oversee Texacos employment practices. Another suit was filed against Avis for refusing to serve blacks in North and South Carolina. Also, rappers, who everyone knows are mostly black, are harassed and put down daily, because of what they sing about. Nobody criticizes country singers who sing about the same thing over and over, or the love songs that all sound the same; you cant tell one apart from the other. It shouldnt matter what color that are or what they look like, its the music that they sing. Every parent thinks that rap is bad, because it has a few swear words, but not if you get the edited version. Everyone thinks that only rappers commit crimes. But in actuality, blacks make up to 12 percent of the population, and 30 percent of arrests made are blacks being arrested for violent crimes (US NEWS 93). A black man can not even get a cab for hours because cabbies are afraid to drive through the ghetto. Really, what is the ghetto? Only a place where homeless and low income black and white people live and hang out. In a recent Associated Press article, (Charles J. Ogletree, Harvard Law Professor), a powerful group of civil rights and class-action lawyers will seek compensation for American black descendants from slaves. The effort appears to be the most serious initiative to get compensation for American blacks for 244 years of legalized slavery. Ogletree stated, We will be seeking more than just monetary compensation. We want a change in America. We want full recognition and a remedy of how slavery stigmatized, raped, murdered, and exploited millions of African through no fault of their own. There are more questions than answers in the planned lawsuit, such as: when will the suit be filed, who are the defendants, and what damages will be sought? However, both public and private parties will be the subject of their efforts. This will be the most important case in the history of out country. No one knows the magnitude effect the lawsuit will have on this nation. It would have seemed better that America aggressively pursue a political solution but lawsuits and legislation have really gone nowhere in the past. It will probably come down to this, that when corporate America is hit in its own pocketbook, real change will occur. I strongly believe that the responsibility doesnt solely lie with big businesses and government but also within each one of us. one person can make a difference Making a choice to treat everyone equally, fairly, and with respect is the first step. Watching what we say by putting ourselves in anothers situation first is also doing our part. Otherwise, we just become part of the huge problem we currently have. Whats it going to bewill you be a part of the perpetual persecution of blacks or stand up for what is rightÃ'Ž
Obesity is a long-term complex condition
Obesity is a long-term complex condition Obesity is a long-term complex condition which has become a worry for many people in our culture nowadays and it is important to obtain and realizing of what obesity is. According to Wlardlow (Journal of the Hela, 2000, vol. 7) obesity is defined as a condition characterized by excess body fat and also defined as being 20% above the average weight. Generally increase consumption of foods high in fats and sugars may lead to obesity. According to research, we all have and require fat tissue in our bodies. When there is too much body fat, the result is obesity (The World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia CD-ROM, 1996). Classification of obesity is commonly based on Body Mass Index (BMI) which adjusts body weight for height is associated with the total body fat content in adults. A BMI of 25-29.9 is classified as overweight while a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese. The energy needed by the human body is divided into two. Primary energy is needed by the human body for non-voluntary act ivities, such as heart rate, breathing, bowel movements, and others and secondary energy activity and movement is caused by human use during the day walking, swimming and movement in general. The World Health Organization, the National Institute of Health. Its over- all prevalence has increased by 33% in the last decade (Merck, 2003, pp. 685-687). Researchers have found that obesity is directly related to an increase in the mortality rate (Journal of American Medical Assoc., 2003, vol. 289, 2, pp.187-193). Obesity tends to run throughout ones life, meaning that its presence at any age will increase the risk of the condition at later ages. This paper discussed the causes and effects of obesity.à Obesity can contribute to many adverse health outcomes which increase ones risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, gallbladder disease, cancers, pulmonary disease, bone joint disorders and early death( Rosemary., para.2 ).Each plays an important role so many people are overweight or obese nowadays because of many factors that influence being obese or overweight which include behavior, environment , eating habits and lifestyle changes all plays an significant role in obesity. According to the American Medical Association, being obese means that 30% of your ideal body weight is constituted by fat (Atkinson, 1999). Obesity is the worlds biggest health epidemic at the moment! Preventing obesity is one of the main steps that we need to focus on. Causes of Obesity To begin with, there are many causes that lead people to become obese. First of all, many people get obese because of heredity. For example, if the person has a strong family history of obesity, he will have the tendency to be obese more than the other people with no family history. Some people are prone to gain weight and store fat due to increase in genetic. Although not everyone with this tendency will become obese, some persons without genetic tendency do become obese. This is due to our genes that decides the level of metabolism. Wardlaw, Insel and Seyler suggest that genetic background accounts for about 70% of weight differences between people. The genetic and hormonal problems lead people to get higher weight than they should as it tends to run in families. The sedentary life style of some people also plays a role in being obese. Technology has made labor and timesaving products such as, cars, computers and TVs with remote controls devices reducesà the overall amount of energy used in their daily lives (NIDDK, 2001). Employers do not give efforts for the physical activities and most hold jobs that involve minimal physical labor especially at work places. If people do not practice enough exercise due to the use of cars instead of walking. For example, lack of movement due to demand for watching TV and playing video games rather than engaged in playing different sports. Besides, eating habits include the spreading of the fast food which contain high amount of fat and calories and changing environment has widened food options and eating habits. for example, Shelves in the supermarkets are stocked with a greater selection of foods, soft drinks, fast food restaurants and pre-packaged foods are more accessible today. Although such foods are fast and convenient they tend to be very high in fat and calories contributing to an excess caloric intake, causing weight gain (National Institute of Digestive, Diabetes and Kidney Disease, 2001). So people are not aware of the quality and quantity of the food, they will certainly end up in raising their weight. The psychological condition has great influences on some people to become obese especially those who suffer from certain emotional or stress problems, because their feelings influence their eating habits, causing them to overeat.

Being Ignominious Will Only Backfire :: essays research papers
Being Ignominious Will Only Backfire à à à à à Almost everyone has done something deceptive and had the result backfire. Itââ¬â¢s usually to avoid an unfavorable event, when in the long run what was avoided still occurs. Roxy a beautiful one-sixteenth black slave tried the same thing in Puddââ¬â¢nhead Wilson by switching her infant Chambers with her masters infant Tom. The infants were identical and born on the same day, the only difference was Chambers was considered black. Roxy went through with her plan to avoid her son being sold away from her, either of them going down river, and many other misfortunes that might happen. à à à à à When Roxy switched Tom and Chambers the purpose was to not only avoid sending Chambers down river, but also allow him live a life not only as a free man but also a privileged white one with heir to an estate. à à à à à ââ¬Å"Tomâ⬠grows up to be a coward and barbaric man. He is rude to other people including his real mother Roxy. Through out his childhood he has ââ¬Å"Chambersâ⬠fight for him and get him out of his problems. ââ¬Å"Chambers was strong beyond his years, and a good fighter; strong because he was coarsely fed and hard worked about the house, and a good fighter because Tom furnished him plenty of practice- on white boys whom he hated and was afraid of.â⬠(Pg. 42) ââ¬Å"Tomâ⬠is rude to other people including his real mother Roxy. He commits robbery on several occasions to make up for the money he lost while gambling. Then, after Roxy became a freed slave ââ¬Å"Tomâ⬠sold her down river, and later murdered his uncle, Judge Driscoll, in a robbery attempt. à à à à à Puddââ¬â¢nhead Wilson uses his wit and fingerprinting theory to prove in court that Tom and Chambers were switched at their young age. ââ¬Å"Between the ages of seven months and eight months those children were changed in the cradle.â⬠(Pg. 163) Wilson then also discovered that ââ¬Å"Tomâ⬠murdered Judge Driscoll. ââ¬Å"The murderer of your friend and mine- York Driscoll of the generous hard and the kindly spirit- sits in among you. Acquisition and Justification of Beliefs :: Psychology Access Internalism Essays
Bartleby is a lazy student who refuses to study simply because he would prefer not. Although his teacher, Mr. Smith, automatically assumes that Bartleby failed the final exam he just took, Mr. Smith could have reasoned that he has sufficient evidence to support his belief. Mr. Smith has seen that Bartleby shows little interest in the class, that he has poor study habits and has consistently failed all his previous exams, and that just about enough questions were incorrect on the portion of the exam that Mr. Smith did have time to grade to warrant a failing grade. But because final grades are due and Mr. Smith runs out of time to finish grading, he marks an ââ¬ËFââ¬â¢ on Bartlebyââ¬â¢s test without actually calculating the score or even realizing that he has sufficient evidence to support his belief that Bartleby failed. Later, Mr. Smith comes to find out that his belief was true, thus once again confirming Mr. Smithââ¬â¢s time-tested bias that students who have failed in the past are perpetual failures. Was Mr. Smithââ¬â¢s belief justified? Intuitively, we would want to say that it isnââ¬â¢t, because his belief is grounded in, or caused by, his bias against Bartleby. The problem is that both rigidly Internalist, like Access Internalism, and rigidly Externalist accounts of justification, like Reliabilism, have difficulties with showing how bias can disqualify a seemingly justified belief. In what follows, I will use Matthias Steupââ¬â¢s account, ââ¬Å"A Defense of Internalismâ⬠[1], to explain Access Internalism and then use the scenario just presented to show how the justificatory requirements of Access Internalism are incompatible with the findings of current psychological research on how most beliefs are actually acquired and justified. Next I will briefly discuss how a much weaker form of Internalism with an Externalist character, Psychological Internalism, can avoid the problems of Access Internalism, but at the cost of missing out on the main benefits of both strongly Internalist and strongly externalist theories. Next I will use Alvin Goldmanââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"Reliabilism: What is Justified Belief?â⬠[2] to explain the basic ideas of Reliabilist Externalism and again use the Bartleby situation to draw out the inconsistencies between the Reliabilist requirements of justification and our normative intuitions of what justification ought to be.
